Barry Murphy: One Hundred Percent Legend

NOBODY HAS MADE MORE LEAGUE APPEARANCES for Barnsley FC than Barry Murphy. The former right back, centre back, captain and club coach lined out 569 times in the league and became Mr Barnsley for the Oakwell faithful. He made his final appearance in April 1978, aged 38, at which time he was also coaching under former Leeds United legend, Alan Clarke – and when Clarke returned to Elland Road as manager Murphy joined him and spent four years away from his beloved Barnsley. But there was only ever one club that won the heart of the man they called ‘Spud’, who confesses Barnsley has been ‘my life’.
